30 Sept 2023 La Macarena Columbia to Quito Ecuador: Peaceful Pretty Painless

Updated: Oct 3, 2023

Of course I was awake! Of course I was the last to meet at the restaurant! However I was the first to grab coffee. Taking flasks of coffee and chocolate (purportedly from the cacoa butter we made) we boarded the canoe heading for the same spot we watched the sun set.

After a slight hitch when the engine cut we beached on the river island bank. Sipping cocoa and coffee we watched the sun peak over the cloudy horizon.

Dolphins! Que? We were lucky enough to see the snouts and backs of a river pod swimming past. They were hard enough to spot Nevermind photograph!

The sun rise was lovely. I snapped merrily away, most are destined for the bin I expect. It’s irresistible when you need to view through the iPhone to save your eyes to not just press that button one more time!

Show over, we returned for breakfast. Not knowing when our next meal would be we had everything! Still early we had enough time to enjoy the morning, shower and pack before checking out. Believing the hype I requested a bottle of cacay oil perfect for sun damaged faces!

After checking our bags at La Macarena airport, we went on a ankle restoring potion and fridge magnet hunt. Success was followed by trying local yoghurt fruit drinks in the central square park. They were delicious; I preferred araza creamy tasting and Simon guanábano mango-ish.

We wasted too much time sitting and we’re in trouble from our guide for missing the first roll call for the flight. Everything was done by hand and on paper. Earlier the militia had searched Simon’s bag but waved me through. Saying a fond farewell to our guide, we stood in the shade watching them manually unload and re-load the hold whilst personally welcomung the new arrivals.

The flight was quite bumpy, I suppose I should have expected a 46 seater turbo propelled plane to be buffeted.

Arriving back in temperate Bogotá we finally located the shuttle bus back to the Movich 26 hotel to retrieve our suitcases. Kindly, a blind eye was turned to a spot of luggage rearrangement.

Back on the shuttle to el Dorado international airport whilst checking in for the flight to Quito the lady flummoxed us asking for the ticket number for our flight leaving Ecuador. Neither our itinerary nor a call to the local travel agency rep supplied the information. Eventually she said to show them our itinerary if asked and completed the checkin. I got away with an over weight bag this time. No one seemed to be able to help. There were no lines but we still barely had enough time to eat dinner and spend our change on water before boarding. Clearly visiting Bogotá was a silly idea!

Goodbye Columbia.

Hello Ecuador!

Sitting currently a few thousand metres above Quito we shall shortly find out!

Well no one checked at migration on entry (that’s passport control in Ecuador). We breezed through meeting our wonderful diminutive Ecuadorean guide who accompanied us on the hour long drive to downtown Quito; our hotel, an old Spanish house in the old town. Quito is the highest capital city, it’s very old, situated 2850 metres above sea level between volcanoes, hilly like Porto or San Francisco! The temperature, the daylight hours and the weather are similar all year round! Apparently sunny in the morning rainy in the afternoon, 7-24’C.

That’s all I remember. Tomorrow we arewalking the city so we'll know if it's true.
