Following the car shuffle; we nostalgically retraced our steps through picturesque Lullworth, skirting the shingly cove and clambering up the cliff. No red flag; open ranges.
With stunning, sparkling sea views, we excitedly joined the path again, careful to keep within the yellow way markers. Delight at walking the path again, soon tempered by long steep, sometimes stepped vertical ascents and descents as we hugged the range perimeter across the moorland coast; compensation the bare striated rock on the Jurassic cliffs, and distant tank trails. The smell of cordite on the burnt path, more incentive not to stray!
Passing tourist filled Warbarrow bay and Tyneham village, both abandoned when requisitioned during WWII and now part of Lullworth ranges, we climbed our final ascent.
On the final descent we rounded the headland to see a nodding donkey; Texas? No, the oldest oil well in the UK continuously pumping since 1961 at Kimmeridge oil field. Tide out,
under brooding skies we watched fossil hunters search the newly revealed shelf, before beating the rain to the car.
Bittersweet. Still can’t quite believe we did it!
