Fortified with provisions and the welcome company of a good friend, we left Newquay town for Fistral beach, where surfers were already catching waves.
Rounding the moor on the headland we headed for the Fern pit cafe and ferry to cross the river Gannel. Three days too early for the ferry, and 30mins too early for the tidal bridge; of course we stopped for coffee!
We timed reaching the estuary perfectly, crossing the newly revealed planks. After following the moorland coast with views of Crantock beach, we descended the dunes to walk the beach at Holywell bay. Catching up the miles slipped by!
Passing the disused military base on the headland, the full force of the wind hit as we descended into Perran bay. Sand whipped, as we trudged the 2miles of almost empty beautiful beach into the teeth of the blast. We just beat the rain for a welcome cream tea!
Cream tea Rating 7 No 4 Bistró (Fair; great presentation; dry location!)
Official SW Coast path: 11miles
Official running total: 200miles
