Day 19 Portreath to Hayle Undulating; Uncompromising winds; Unique experience

Updated: Jul 30, 2022

Eventually we found the path and climbed the hill overlooking Portreath; fortunately the toilet block produced a smile. Undulating moorland cliffs followed passing great views of contorted cliffs, nesting seabirds, smugglers craggy coves, including Ralph’s cupboard & Hell’s mouth, where I spied a cafe and insisted we divert! Strengthening wind blew us round the headland making photographing the lighthouse (inspiration for Virginia Woolfs’ novel) on Godrevy island tricky! We did manage to spy a seal though.

Unrelenting, unpleasant, unforgiving wind drove us down to the beach to walk the just amazing three or more sandy miles to Hayle. Unfortunately the wind whipped my contact lens away.

Unsurprisingly we had it virtually to ourselves, only the odd hard surfer and on duty life guard for company. It was a unique experience, beach walking, one eyed, whilst being blasted! We did manage a snack behind a few rocks.

On reaching the BnB we realised we had the use of a garden shed kitted out as a fully functional Irish pub!

Thank you so much to our friend for keeping us company, we will miss you!

Official SW Coast path: 12miles
