Day 27 Porthleven to The Lizard; Stunning bays; Sunlit Seas; Sunshine; Skylark Songs

Updated: Jul 30, 2022

In the sunny carpark, we said farewell to our son, before joining the path through Porthleven up the cliffs above with views looking back. Easy cliff walking led down to a gravel sand bar crossing; sea on the right, freshwater Loe on the left.

Cliff erosion diverted us around Gunwalloe beach before we found the hidden church at Chapel cove; after stopping for coffee (and cake of course) on the beach.

Watching the paddle boarders we started climbing the first of many ascents and descents through pretty coves full of visitors (not as tough as earlier sections thankfully) to the site of the first Marconi transatlantic radio signal in 1901. The coast is picturesque, the blue sky setting off the rocks, islands and cliffs.

After Mullion cove the cliffs became wilder; leaving the crowds behind with skylarks singing, we climbed up and down across the flowery moorland to stunning Kynance cove. Dodging both waves and sun bathers we scrambled across the pebbled cove.

Rounding the headland later we celebrated reaching the most southerly point, the Lizard, with strawberries and cream. The Lizard is not named after the reptile or the serpentinite rock it’s famous for but is thought to be a corruption of old Cornish ‘Lys Ardh’ meaning high court. After walking past the lighthouse (built in 1751), the phone lost charge; after a bit of confusion and retracing we found our way to the Lizard town, dinner and the bnb in time for the football (helpfully delayed! )

Official SW Coast path: 13miles

Official running total: 298miles
