Day 36 Polperro to Portwrinkle; Contrasting; Confusing; Coastal Conurbations

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

What a day of contrasts! Glorious weather accompanied us as the path crossed, cliffs, meadows, woods, farmland, coastal towns and villages, roads, beaches, crowds and solitude - you name it we walked through it! After steeply descending through ancient Polperro, looking it’s best (tide in) we ascended the cliff hugging path to Looe; still narrow and tough, but easier than yesterday, with great views of the rocky coastal bays. Confusion reigned in Looe, couldn’t find boots, then they couldn’t find my husbands prescription and couldn’t find a loo in Looe! We did manage coffee and cake on the beach.

Next we walked through various coastal conurbations before another foundered path diversion inland through pastoral countryside, shady woods and meadows complete with sheep and hand gliders enjoying the cliff thermals! Moments of solitude welcome after the busier towns and beaches.

Returning to cliff hugging paths, the nettle waltz and views across to Devon we descended, via the obligatory ups and downs, into Portwrinkle just in time for ice cream and pasties before the cafe closed. A short uphill walk inland and we eventually found our BNB in a picturesque wooded valley.

Official SW Coast path: 12miles

Official running total: 395miles
